Mohs Surgery: The Gold Standard for Skin Cancer Treatment

Why Choose Mohs Surgery?

  • Highest cure rate of any skin cancer treatment.
  • Minimally invasive and tissue-sparing, leading to smaller scars.
  • Performed by Dr. Shah in a single visit with immediate tissue analysis and Plastic Surgery repair.
  • Ideal for high-risk areas like the face, neck, and shins where preserving healthy tissue and cosmetic outcomes are essential

Mohs surgery is the most effective and precise technique for treating skin cancer. Dr. Shah serves as both surgeon and pathologist, removing cancerous tissue and analyzing it under the microscope to ensure all cancer cells are eliminated while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. Once clear, Dr. Shah will discuss reconstructive surgical options with the patient. This technique offers the best cure rate and the best functional and aesthetic outcomes.

The procedure is done in stages, with tissue removal followed by in-house microscopic analysis to confirm clear margins. The entire process, including any necessary Plastic Surgery reconstruction, is completed in a single visit by Dr. Shah. Depending on the type of skin cancer, the size, and the location, the procedure may take several hours. We encourage all patients to follow their pre- and post-operative care instructions carefully to ensure a smooth process and recovery.

Who Performs the Procedure?

Dr. Shah is a highly skilled Mohs Surgeon, Facial Reconstructive Surgeon, and Cosmetic Surgeon, with expertise in the treatment and reconstruction of skin cancer defects. His extensive training allows him to deliver the highest level of care for both cancer removal and reconstruction, ensuring patients achieve excellent functional and cosmetic outcomes.

What to Expect During Mohs Surgery

The procedure is performed in steps, starting with the removal of a thin layer of cancerous tissue. Each layer is carefully examined under a microscope in our on-site state-of-the-art laboratory. If cancer cells remain, Dr. Shah will pinpoint their exact location and remove another layer, sparing as much healthy tissue as possible. This process is repeated until no cancer cells remain.

Here’s a breakdown of the Mohs surgery process:

1. Examination & Preparation: Dr. Shah will review your case, mark the surgical site, and administer local anesthesia to ensure comfort.

2. First Layer Removal: A thin layer of visible cancerous tissue is removed.

3. Lab and Microscopic Analysis: The tissue is examined under a microscope by Dr. Shah in our in-house lab to determine if any cancer cells remain. If cancer cells are detected, Dr. Shah will precisely map their location.

4. Additional Layer Removal (if needed): If necessary, additional layers of tissue are removed, repeating the analysis until no cancer cells are present.

5. Wound Repair & Reconstruction: After cancer removal, Dr. Shah will discuss reconstructive options. Whether a simple closure or more complex plastic surgery repair is needed, his goal is to achieve the smallest scar and the best aesthetic and functional result.
