Hair Loss Q & A
What is hair loss?
Hair grows in cycles and your body naturally sheds 50-100 hairs a day. Hair loss occurs when the rate of shedding exceeds the rate of hair growth.
This change in the hair growth cycle creates thinning or balding that most often affects the hair on the scalp.
Metroplex Dermatology specializes in diagnosing and treating hair loss. In fact, hair loss is one of the most common reasons people visit a dermatologist.
What causes hair loss?
Hair loss can develop from any number of causes. Some of the most common include:
- Illness
- Side effect of medication or medical treatment
- Stress
- Hair care
- Nutrient deficiency
Your genetics may also increase your risk of developing male- or female-pattern baldness.
What happens during a hair loss consultation?
When you visit Metroplex Dermatology for a hair loss consultation, Dr. Hensley conducts an in-depth evaluation to find the underlying cause of your hair loss.
During your consultation, Dr. Hensley asks detailed questions about your hair, including when you started to notice the change in thickness and health. Dr. Hensley also reviews your medical history, types of medications you take, daily stresses, hair routine, and diet.
Dr. Hensley then examines your scalp and may run bloodwork to confirm or rule out a diagnosis to explain your hair loss.
How is hair loss treated?
Dr. Hensley develops individualized treatment plans for hair loss based on the root cause of your condition. In some cases, making changes to your hair routine or diet may be all that’s needed to stop the hair loss.
For more serious conditions, Dr. Hensley may prescribe topical medications to improve hair growth. Metroplex Dermatology also uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to treat hair loss.
How does PRP help hair loss?
PRP is a form of regenerative medicine. It’s made from a sample of your blood and contains a high concentration of platelets, growth factors, and specialized proteins.
When injected into the areas of your scalp where you experience hair loss, the healing properties in PRP stimulate activity in your dormant hair follicles and prolong the growing phase of your hair growth cycle.
For PRP hair loss treatments, Dr. Hensley recommends monthly injections for the first three months. Dr. Hensley recommends you continue the PRP treatments every 3-4 months for up to two years.
Many patients notice an improvement in the thickness and health of their hair within 2-3 months of starting PRP treatment.
